Two Loves
Shaping Relationships
“And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.” (Matthew 22:35)
In this part
Two Loves brings the pathway into its central axis by returning to Jesus’s summary of all that came before. In Matthew 22, the “great commandment” question is a trap, but Jesus answers by reordering the moral universe: the Law is fulfilled by one reality with two directions—Love God and Love your neighbor. This is freeing because it collapses moral complexity into one motion of love (worship upward, compassion outward), and exposing because it unmasks counterfeit religion—religion used as leverage, truth used to humiliate, and love reduced to sentiment or control.
How it begins
The plot begins in a moment of public silence—when Jesus has been answering, teaching, and healing with an authority that won’t be folded into anyone else’s categories.
And then the leaders remember what power feels like when it’s threatened: not just fear, but urgency. Not just concern, but strategy.
Matthew tells us it plainly:
“Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words.” (Matthew 22:15)
It is not curiosity that drives them. It is control. They come not to learn, but to trap. And they do it in the way people do when they cannot afford the truth to stand unchallenged: they attempt to make truth look dangerous by forcing it to answer a question on their terms.
The Pharisees were a Jewish movement known for their intense care for the Law—especially as it was lived out through traditions and interpretations. They were concerned with holiness, purity, and obedience, and they trained people to be faithful not only in what was written, but in what was implied, taught, and practiced.
But in Matthew 22, you see the darker risk that can attach to moral seriousness: devotion can become leverage.
When holiness becomes a tool for defending status, the heart stops asking, “What is God like?” and starts asking, “How do I protect myself?” When that happens, the Law no longer opens into love. It becomes a weapon to hold at the ready.
The story continues in the book.
